Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Understand the day to day responsibilities of an infection control lead.
  2. Know the practical steps that can be implemented to stop the spread of infection, including hand hygiene processes.
  3. Understand the decontamination process and the essential requirements.
  4. Be aware on how to effectively manage needlestick injuries.
  5. Understand the legal requirements for safer sharps.
  6. Explain the role of vaccination and types of immunity.
  7. Discuss biofilms and legionella, and identify the potential sources of this infection.
  8. Understand the requirement to undertake a written legionella risk assessment of water plumbing and DUWLs.
  9. Explain the National Patient Safety Agency colour coding scheme.
  10. Demonstrate the appropriate surgery checks that an infection control lead should undertake.
  11. Demonstrate how to carry out a risk assessment and what an infection control risk assessment must include.
