What is CPD?

Keeping skills and knowledge up to date throughout your career is at the heart of what it means to be a healthcare professional.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) can support healthcare professionals in maintaining and updating their skills, knowledge and behaviour throughout their working life. It can also help in contributing to the delivery of good quality patient care and service provision, that patients and the public trust is safe.

As a registered healthcare professional you have a duty to maintain, develop and work within your professional knowledge and skills and make sure your personal behaviour maintains patients’ confidence in you and the dental profession, so you can provide the best possible treatment and care.

Undertaking CPD is often a compulsory part of your professional registration. It is important to meet the CPD requirements to maintain your registration.

CPD helps to maintain public confidence by showing that healthcare professionals are staying up to date. This is so you can give your patients the best possible treatment and make an effective contribution to health provision in the UK.
