This course is a recording of a live IRMER update event by Kevin Kane.
Kevin is a general dental practitioner and practice owner of a 3 surgery practice in Lichfield, Staffordshire . Before embarking on his dental career, he was a Radiographer at the General Hospital Birmingham for 5 years before training as a Dentist at Birmingham University. He has maintained his interest in radiography and radiology during his undergraduates days and began lecturing in 2002, initially to DCPs and then to Foundation Dentists and onto postgraduate courses. He is currently a foundation trainer on the West Midlands scheme and has his certificate in medical education.

Aim
To provide dental professionals with the core of knowledge to comply with IRMER.
Objectives
- Discuss the risk of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection in dental radiology.
- Outline statutory responsibilities.
- State radiation doses in dental radiology and the factors affecting radiation dose.
- Discuss the importance of quality assurance measures.
- Discuss the use of selection criteria in relation to dental radiography.
- Discuss the changes to legislation concerning dental radiology.
- Understand the different imaging modalities currently available e.g. 2D and 3D (CBCT) digital imaging.
